He married Eudoxie or Eudokia Komnene, niece of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos. Eudokia Komnene or Eudocia Comnena ( Greek: Ευδοκία Κομνηνή Eudokia Komnēnē) (c For the eldest son of Andronikos I Komnenos and father of Alexios I of Trebizond, see Manuel Komnenos (born 1145. A condition of the marriage was that the firstborn child, boy or girl, would succeed to the lordship of Montpellier on William's death.
Wiiliam VIII was a patron of troubadours. A troubadour ( IPA:, originally) was a composer and performer of Occitan Lyric poetry during the High Middle Ages (1100&ndash1350 Arnaut de Mareuil came to his court after fleeing from the entourage of Azalais of Toulouse, and at least one of Arnaut's poems is addressed to him. Arnaut de Mareuil ( fl late 12th century) was a Troubadour, composing Lyric poetry in the Occitan language. Azalais of Toulouse (or Alais, or Adelaide of Béziers) was the daughter of count Raymond V of Toulouse and Constance of France
William died in 1202. He and Eudoxie had no sons, and it was their daughter Marie of Montpellier who was to benefit from the terms of the marriage agreement. Marie of Montpellier (adapted from Occitan: Maria de Montpelhièr) (1182 &ndash 18 April 1213) was the daughter of William VIII of Montpellier
