Weezer was the band's first release without longtime bassist Matt Sharp, seen by some as an important contributor to the band's early sound. Matthew Kelly Sharp (born September 22, 1969 in Bangkok Thailand) is a founding member and former Bassist for the band Weezer. [1] He quit in order to fully pursue his own band, The Rentals. The Rentals are a rock band fronted by Matt Sharp, former bass player for Weezer. He would end up suing the band before the release of their fourth album, Maladroit, seeking compensation and songwriting credit for songs such as "Undone - The Sweater Song," "El Scorcho," and "The Good Life. Mikey Welsh (born April 20, 1971 in Syracuse, New York) is a former bassist of the band Weezer. [3]

Following the commercial and critical failure of Pinkerton, frontman Rivers Cuomo placed the band on hiatus. Pinkerton is the second album by the American Alternative rock band Weezer, released on September 24 1996 Rivers Cuomo (born June 13, 1970) is a Musician best known as the lead Singer, Guitarist, and principal Songwriter He dropped out of Harvard to focus on songwriting. [4] During this time, he played with a different rotation of musicians in Boston called Homie, referred to by fans as the Rivers Cuomo Band. Homie is a side project of Rivers Cuomo, lead singer of the band Weezer. [5] One of the members of Homie was Mikey Welsh, who would eventually be asked to replace Matt Sharp in Weezer. Mikey Welsh (born April 20, 1971 in Syracuse, New York) is a former bassist of the band Weezer. Matthew Kelly Sharp (born September 22, 1969 in Bangkok Thailand) is a founding member and former Bassist for the band Weezer. [6] In the Winter of 1997-1998, the Rivers Cuomo Band recorded mostly acoustic songs at Fort Apache Studios and some at Cuomo's house in Cambridge. Fort Apache Studios is a New England recording studio internationally renowned for Alternative rock sessions produced there since 1986 Cambridge Massachusetts is a City in the Greater Boston area of Massachusetts, United States. [7] This was considered to be a full album worth of material that was never mixed and remains unreleased. [7] The Homie band's only official release was a track for the Meet the Deedles soundtrack entitled "American Girls. Meet the Deedles is a 1998 American live-action Disney Comedy film directed by Steve Boyum and starring Paul Walker and "[8]
By February 1998, Cuomo ditched the Homie band without much notice and headed to Los Angeles to begin work on Weezer demos with Brian Bell and Patrick Wilson. Los Angeles (lɑˈsændʒələs los ˈaŋxeles in Spanish) is the largest City in the state of California and the American West Brian Bell, (born December 9 1968, Iowa City, Iowa) is Patrick "Pat" George Wilson (born February 1, 1969 in Buffalo New York) is best known as the Drummer for the Alt-rock [9] At this point, bassist Matt Sharp was absent from numerous Weezer rehearsals and becoming very estranged from the band. Matthew Kelly Sharp (born September 22, 1969 in Bangkok Thailand) is a founding member and former Bassist for the band Weezer. [10][11] On April 8, 1998, Matt Sharp announced his official exit from Weezer to devote all his energies to his band, The Rentals. The Rentals are a rock band fronted by Matt Sharp, former bass player for Weezer. [12] By the Spring of 1998, it would be revealed that former Homie member Mikey Welsh would take over on bass for Weezer. [13][14] Weezer continued rehearsal and cut demos until the fall of 1998. [15] Frustration and creative disagreements led to a decline in rehearsals, and in late fall of 1998, drummer Patrick Wilson left for his home in Portland pending renewed productivity from Cuomo. [16] Rivers Cuomo went into a period of admitted depression,[17] painting the walls of his home black and putting "fiberglass insulation all over the windows and then black sheets of fiberglass so that no light could get through. Major depressive disorder, also known as major depression, unipolar depression, unipolar disorder, clinical depression, or simply depression "[16]
By the beginning of 1999, Weezer had gone their separate ways. Drummer Patrick Wilson resumed his efforts with his side-band The Special Goodness and guitarist Brian Bell worked on his band The Space Twins. The Special Goodness is the side project of Weezer ’s drummer Patrick Wilson. Space Twins is an American rock band fronted by Weezer guitarist Brian Bell. [18] Meanwhile Mikey Welsh toured with Juliana Hatfield. Juliana Hatfield (born July 27, 1967 in Wiscasset, Maine, United States) is an American Guitarist Singer-songwriter [18] Meanwhile Cuomo focused deeply on songwriting, crafting 121 songs, of which close to half would become demos. A songwriter is someone who writes the Lyrics to songs the Musical composition (chords or Melody to songs or both [18] During this time, he had isolated himself, having very little contact with the outside world. Solitude is a state of Seclusion or Isolation, ie lack of contact with people or love [19][20] He received braces on his teeth, further damaging his self-esteem. In Psychology, self-esteem reflects a Person 's overall evaluation or appraisal of her or his own worth [21] Brian Bell would occasionally visit Cuomo and play some songs with him. Cuomo would eventually reveal songs he was working on to Bell. [20]
Meanwhile, unbeknowest to the band, their fanbase was ballooning due to the expansion of the internet. [21][22] The reputation of Pinkerton was greatly improving due to word-of-mouth over the internet, quietly shifting thousands of units each week. Pinkerton is the second album by the American Alternative rock band Weezer, released on September 24 1996 Word of mouth, is a reference to the passing of Information by verbal means especially recommendations but also general information in an informal person-to-person [23] This expanding internet activity would later set the stage for the band's 2001 comeback. [22]
Renewed interaction between band members took place when Weezer was offered an extremely lucrative offer to perform in Japan in August 2000. For a topic outline on this subject see List of basic Japan topics. [24] The festival served as a catalyst for Weezer's productivity, and from April to May 2000, the band rehearsed and demoed new songs in Los Angeles. A music festival is a Festival oriented towards Music that is sometimes presented with a theme such as Musical genre, Nationality or locality A rehearsal is a preparatory event in Music and Theatre (and in other contexts that is performed before the official public Performance, as a form of Rehearsals for the show, reinvigorated the band into talking about making a new album. [25] The band returned to performing in June 2000, playing low-key shows around Los Angeles, but without the Weezer name. [25] Instead, the shows featured the group's first use of the pseudonym, Goat Punishment, so they could play to only longtime fans who would recognize the name. A pseudonym is a fictitious alternative to a person's legal name (see Alias) [25]
Eventually the band started performing more high profile gigs such as the Warped Tour. The Warped Tour' is a touring music and Extreme sports festival [26] Cuomo later remarked, "We went in there fully expecting to be booed and to have things thrown at us. But it was exactly the opposite, people were singing along to all the songs and just going crazy, giving us the best support. And I think that gave us the confidence we needed. "[27] The positive response to the Warp Tour performances lend to further shows being scheduled. [28][29]
When touring began to wind down, MP3 demos captured live on the band's mobile unit and sound checks began to surface on file-sharing services and eventually on the band's official website for download. MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a Digital audio encoding format using a form of Lossy data compression A soundcheck is an activity that takes place before a Concert, speech or similar performance when the performer and the sound crew run through a small [30] These songs were often referred to as Summer Songs of 2000 (commonly abbreviated, SS2K). [22]
On October 23rd, Cuomo announced that the band would start recording material "with or without" a producer. [31] However, the band's record label opted to have the band have a record producer due to the commercial failure of their self-produced album Pinkerton. In the Music industry, a record producer or music producer has many roles among them controlling the recording sessions coaching and guiding the musicians organizing [31] The band began rehearsing and arranging both the Summer Songs of 2000 and newer material Cuomo had written at Cuomo's home with engineer Chad Bamford. [31] The band eventually decided on Ric Ocasek who produced their debut album. Ric Ocasek (born Richard Otcasek on March 23, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American musician [29][32] The band began sending demos to Ocasek during the Summer of 2000. [33] There was much debate among the band whether or not to record in Los Angeles or Ocasek's New York home, eventually deciding to record in Los Angeles at Cello Studios. [33][32] The band continued to demo new music daily, and started to weeding through more than seventy-five demos, eventually homing in on twenty-five pontential album tracks in anticipation of Ocasek's arrival. A demo version or demo of a song (shortened from the word "demonstration" is one recorded for reference rather than for release [34] Ocasek would work with the band to trim the track listing down further to eighteen songs. [35]
Recording sessions for the album began in early December, Ocasek would provide creative feedback to the band by telephone. [32] While recording the album, the band performed gigs under their pseudonym Goat Punishment. [36][37] On December 27th, the band would embark on what would be close to six weeks of studio work by playing songs repetitively in order to track the bass and drums parts. [37] They also did "scratch takes" of the vocals and guitar, designed to get accurate rhythm tracks before being redone more efficiently later in the recording process. [37]
During recording, one of the higher-up's at the band's label Geffen Records dropped by to check on the band's progress, announcing dissatisfaction with several tracks. Geffen Records is an American Record label, owned by Universal Music Group, and operated as one third of UMG's Interscope-Geffen-A&M label Eventually forcing the band to discard a few of the album's possible song contenders. [38] The band would then relocate to the smaller studio in another part of Cello Studios. A recording studio is a facility for sound recording. Ideally the space is specially designed by an acoustician to achieve the desired acoustic properties (sound Cuomo and Bell would work on guitar takes, while the entire band would put down vocal tracks. [39] Ocasek remarked, "Rivers always does his guitar parts in one take. "[39] After three weeks into the recording sessions, the guitar work was completed. [40]
Mixing for the album began on January 31st by Tom Lord-Alge at South Beach Studios. Audio mixing is the process by which a multitude of sound sources are combined into one or more channels Tom Lord-Alge is a three-time Grammy-Award winning Record producer and mixer widely known as a leader in music mixing [41][42] Drummer Patrick Wilson was absent from the mixing process because he had returned home to Portland to work on material for his band The Special Goodness. The Special Goodness is the side project of Weezer ’s drummer Patrick Wilson. [43] Brian Bell was also absent from the mixing process. [43]
The art direction of the album was handled by Chris Bilheimer with photography from Marina Chavez and Karl Koch. Karl Michael Koch (pronounced 'cook' (born September 15, 1969) is the Webmaster of American rock band Weezer 's official website weezer [44] The album cover was shot in between band practices. It featured Mikey Welsh, Rivers Cuomo, Brian Bell and Patrick Wilson standing left to right in front of a plain, lime-green backdrop in a manner similar to the band's debut album, it was done as a tribute to Ric Ocasek who had produced their first album. Ric Ocasek (born Richard Otcasek on March 23, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American musician [45] It was also to symbolize the band's back-to-basics approach they took while recording the album. [45] This is evident by a quote in the linear notes of the album, "Torniamo all'antico e sarà un progresso. "[46][47] This is a quote from Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi that roughly translates in English to "Let us return to old times and that will be progress. "[48] Cuomo remarked on the artwork:
| “ | I set out to design the package exactly how I would want it, and it just turns out that it's very similar to the first album. I'm the same person as I was then, pretty much. I have the same taste so I don't see why it should be different. [45][49] | ” |

Under the CD tray of the album on the white paper's edge, the word "No" can be found. [44] Some fans speculate that this is a response to Radiohead's album OK Computer which has the text "I like you. Radiohead OK Computer is the third album by English Alternative rock band Radiohead, released on 16 June 1997 I like you. You are a wonderful person. I'm full of enthusiasm. I'm going places. I'll be happy to help you. I am an important person, would you like to come home with me?"[51] This has, however, not been confirmed. The band's official explanation was vague, simply stating, "No means no. "[52]
The album is dedicated "In loving memory of Mykel and Carli" for Mykel and Carli Allan, sisters devoted to developing fan clubs for up-and-coming bands. [50] The two, who had been influential in starting Weezer's fan club, died in a car crash in 1997. [53]
The album was met with enthusiasm from the record label. [54] "They had nothing but supportive and excited things to say about it," remarked Karl Koch. Karl Michael Koch (pronounced 'cook' (born September 15, 1969) is the Webmaster of American rock band Weezer 's official website weezer [54] However, the album's original release date of April 17 was postponed due to executives not liking Cuomo's choice of the first single which was "Hash Pipe," citing the song's lurid content about a transvestite prostitute as inappropriate, they suggested that "Don't Let Go" instead. " Hash Pipe " is a popular single by Weezer. Released in 2001 it was the first single off the band's long-awaited third album Weezer This article deals with the history of the word 'transvestite' Prostitution is the act of performing Sexual activity in exchange for Money. [55] Yet, Cuomo continued to fight and eventually won out and "Hash Pipe" eventually became the album's first single. [55] The label would once again try to postpone the release date further till June, however, once the band found out about this, they argued with the executives and the May 15th release date stuck. [56]
The video for "Hash Pipe" was directed by Marcos Siega, the first of many Weezer videos that Siega would direct. Marcos Siega (born June 8 1969 in New York City New York is a film television commercial and music video director In the video, Weezer is playing while a group of sumo wrestlers are standing in the background. [56] The song would experience censorship often played as "H*** Pipe" (the title employed on the music video's title card) or "Half Pipe. On May 15, 2001, the album was released debuting at #4 on the Billboard charts, making it Weezer's first Top 10 album. The next single "Island in the Sun" was a successful radio hit and perhaps the band's biggest hit overseas. "Island in the Sun" is a 2001 single by Weezer. It is the second single from the band's album Weezer (The Green Album. It peaked at #11 on the US Modern Rock Charts[60] and at #31 on the UK Top 40. Hot Modern Rock Tracks (originally called Modern Rock Tracks) is a music chart in the United States that has appeared in ''Billboard'' magazine since September The UK Singles Chart is compiled by The Official UK Charts Company (OCC on behalf of the British record industry [64] Two music videos were created for the song. The first video which was directed by Marcos Siega shows Weezer playing the song at a Mexican couple's wedding reception and features all four band members. The United Mexican States ( or commonly Mexico (ˈmɛksɪkoʊ () is a federal constitutional Republic in North America. A wedding reception is a Party held after the completion of a Marriage ceremony [69] This version remains the more obscure of the two, receiving less airplay than the second. The executives at MTV disliked Siega's video, prompting the band to film a second video. [70] The second video which was directed by Spike Jonze featured the band playing with various wild animals on a supposedly remote hill (though it was actually filmed a short distance outside of Los Angeles, which is thought to be in the hills near Simi Valley). Spike Jonze (born Adam Spiegel October 22, 1969) is an American director of Music videos and commercials and an Academy Los Angeles (lɑˈsændʒələs los ˈaŋxeles in Spanish) is the largest City in the state of California and the American West Simi Valley is an incorporated city located in the southeast corner of Ventura County, California, bordering the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles [71][72] Only Brian Bell, Rivers Cuomo, and Patrick Wilson appear in this video, as then bassist Mikey Welsh had been kicked out of or had left the band shortly before shooting. [71][73][74][70] It is also rumored that original bassist Matt Sharp was approached to be in the video, though it is unclear if the offer was ever actually made. Matthew Kelly Sharp (born September 22, 1969 in Bangkok Thailand) is a founding member and former Bassist for the band Weezer. [75] As a result, "Island in the Sun (Version Two)" had much wider play than the first version, and has become the standard video for the song. [70]
The third and final single from the album was "Photograph," which was released to radio in early November. " Photograph " is the third and final single from Weezer 's self-titled third album. [76] The single peaked at #17 on the US Modern Rock Charts. [60] It was also released as the first single in Japan instead of "Hash Pipe. "[77] The band felt the song didn't have the staying power of the previous singles. [78] So they decided to pass on a big-name director for the music video and had Karl Koch shoot and edit a video out of on-the-road footage. The Green Album brought Weezer renewed critical success, earning a 73/100 on Metacritic. Metacritic is a Website that collates reviews of music Albums games, movies, TV shows, DVDs and Books. [79] The album also appeared on over thirty critics' "Best of 2001" lists. [80] Many critics saw the album as a return-to-form to the sound that was present on the band's debut album. Weezer, often referred to as " The Blue Album " is the debut album by the American Alternative rock band Weezer. [81] Nude as the News' Jonathan Cohen praised the album saying, "It's full of timeless songs that don't need drum machines and bloated production tactics to stand out from the pack. PopMatters is an international Webzine of cultural criticism Its scope is broadly cast on all things pop culture Ric Ocasek (born Richard Otcasek on March 23, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American musician And even the songs' lengths are nice and compact. Weezer comes in, plays the song, and exits. No overkill makes for many moments where you want to hear these songs again and again. Perhaps having producer Ric Ocasek back on board was one of the best ideas the band had, as "The Green Album" is certainly water tight all around. "[84]
All songs were written by Rivers Cuomo. Rivers Cuomo (born June 13, 1970) is a Musician best known as the lead Singer, Guitarist, and principal Songwriter
The UK and Japan versions of the album came with an additional bonus tracks, "I Do", which was previously a B-side that appeared on the "Hash Pipe" single.
