Waukesha's name

The name of the city is often misrepresented as meaning "fox" or "little foxes," though it is actually an Anglicization of the name Ojibwe Waagoshag or Potawatomi word Wau-tsha. Potawatomi (also spelled Pottawatomie; in Potawatomi Bodéwadmimwen or Bodéwadmi Zheshmowen or Neshnabémwen) is a Central Wauke-tsha was actually the leader of the local tribe at the time of first European settlement of Waukesha. This is confirmed by accounts of Increase Lapham, an early settler and historian in the region. [8] Original accounts by Lapham indicate that the original word for "Fox" was Pishtaka.
