The film was made in the tradition of the period fantasies started with Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). 20000 Leagues Under the Sea is a 1954 film starring Kirk Douglas as Ned Land James Mason as Captain Nemo, Paul Lukas The film attempted to capitalize on the series of Edgar Allan Poe films that had been made by Roger Corman, starring Price. Edgar Allan Poe (January 19 1809 – October 7 1849 was an American poet, short-story Writer, editor and Literary critic, Roger William Corman (born April 5 1926) sometimes nicknamed "King of the Bs" for his output of B-movies (though he himself rejects this as inaccurate To this extent the film took the title of a Poe poem, "The City Under the Sea", and attempted to exploit the Poe films trend, even though the only connection is a recitation of the poem at the end.
