Volans (pronounced /ˈvoʊlænz/, Latin: flying fish or "flying thing") is a constellation of the southern sky. Latin ( lingua Latīna, laˈtiːna is an Italic language, historically spoken in Latium and Ancient Rome. The Exocoetidae or flying fish are a marine Fish family comprising about 50 Species grouped in 7 to 9 genera. In common usage a constellation is a group of celestial bodies that are connected together in some arrangement typically stars to form a visible figure or picture The constellation was one of twelve constellations first described by Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman between 1595 and 1597, and it first appeared in Johann Bayer's Uranometria of 1603. Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser (1540? &ndash September 1596 aka Petrus Theodori, was a Dutch navigator (originally from Emden) who mapped the southern sky Frederick de Houtman (1571 Gouda - 21 October 1627, Alkmaar) or Frederik de Houtman, was a Dutch explorer who sailed Johann Bayer (1572 &ndash March 7, 1625) was a German Astronomer and Lawyer. Uranometria is the short title of a star atlas produced by Johann Bayer. The current name of the constellation is a shortening of the original name Piscis Volans, "flying fish".
