The VizieR Catalogue Service is an astronomical catalog service provided by Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg. An astronomical catalog or catalogue is a list or tabulation of Astronomical objects typically grouped together because they share a common type morphology origin The Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg ( CDS; English translation Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center) is a data hub which collects and distributes
The origin of the ViZieR Catalogue Service dates back to 1993 as the ESA European Space Information System Catalogue Browser. The European Space Information System (ESIS project was initiated in 1988 as a service for homogeneous access to heterogeneous databases on the network Initially intended to serve the Space Science community, the ESIS project pre-dates the World Wide Web as a network database allowing uniform access to a heterogeneous set of catalogues and data.
The Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg has always been a centre of excellence for the collection and dissemination of astronomical data. The Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg ( CDS; English translation Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center) is a data hub which collects and distributes It was therefore natural that the original ESIS Catalogue Browser would find a home at CDS. Since its inception in 1996, ViZieR has become a reference point for astronomers worldwide engaged in research, who come to access catalogued data regularly published in astronomical journals. The new ViZieR service was refurbished in 1997 by the CDS to better serve the community in terms of searching capabilities and data volume. It has ever since evolved into the most famous Catalogue Server in Astronomy holding ???? catalogues to date, far exceeding any service of this kind in the field.
With the advent of the Astrophysical Virtual Observatory the ViZieR catalogue has gained importance in being the source of all catalogued data within the community. The Astrophysical Virtual Observatory Project (AVO conducted a research and demonstration programme on the scientific requirements and technologies necessary to build a VO for European
