History

The first stretch from Drammen to Larvik was opened on October 13, 1881 while the remaining stretch to Skien opened on November 23, 1882. Larvik is a town and municipality in the county of Vestfold, Norway. Events 54 - Nero ascends to the Roman throne 409 - Vandals and Alans crossed the Pyrenees Year 1881 ( MDCCCLXXXI) was a Common year starting on Saturday (link will display the full calendar of the Gregorian calendar (or a Common Events 800 - Charlemagne arrives at Rome to investigate the alleged crimes of Year 1882 ( MDCCCLXXXII) was a Common year starting on Sunday (link will display the full calendar of the Gregorian calendar (or a Common At first the line was called Grevskapsbanen and the line was originally narrow gauge at 1067 mm, but rebuilt to standard gauge (1435 mm) in 1949. A narrow gauge railway (or narrow gauge railroad) is a Railway that has a Track gauge narrower than the of Standard gauge railways The standard gauge (also named the Stephenson gauge after George Stephenson, or Normal gauge) is a widely-used Rail gauge. Year 1949 ( MCMXLIX) was a Common year starting on Saturday (link will display the full calendar of the Gregorian calendar. Between Eidanger and Skien though there was before this three parallel tracks, making it possible to use both narrow gauged cars and the standard gauged cars used from Brevik to Notodden and onwards to Rjukan. Eidanger is a former rural Parish and Municipality of Telemark county Norway. is a city and municipality in the county of Telemark, Norway. Rjukan is a city and the administrative center of Tinn municipality in Telemark. The line was electrified at 15 kV 16⅔ Hz AC in 1957. Year 1957 ( MCMLVII) was a Common year starting on Tuesday (link displays the 1957 Gregorian calendar)

Vestfoldbanen has had many branch lines. A branch line is a secondary railway line which branches off a more important through route usually a main line. The first opened in 1881 from Skoppum to Horten and named Hortenlinjen. Year 1881 ( MDCCCLXXXI) was a Common year starting on Saturday (link will display the full calendar of the Gregorian calendar (or a Common Skoppum is a village in the municipality of Horten, Norway. Its population (2005 is 1633 Follow this link if you are after the Horten brothers and their flying-wing aircraft In 1895 the line from Eidanger to Brevik, Brevikbanen, was opened and in 1901 Tønsberg-Eidsfossbanen between Tønsberg and Eidsfoss. Year 1895 ( MDCCCXCV) was a Common year starting on Tuesday (link will display full calendar of the Gregorian calendar (or a Common year Eidanger is a former rural Parish and Municipality of Telemark county Norway. is a town in Norway with a population of 2700 Brevik was established as a municipality January 1 1838 (see Formannskapsdistrikt) Year 1901 ( MCMI) was a Common year starting on Tuesday (link will display calendar of the Gregorian calendar (or a Common year starting is a town and municipality in the county of Vestfold, Norway The town of Tønsberg was established as a municipality 1 January 1838 (see Formannskapsdistrikt) Eidsfoss is a village in Hof municipality Norway. The following year, in 1902, Holmestrand-Vittingfossbanen opened between Holmestrand and Vittingfoss. Year 1902 ( MCMII) was a Common year starting on Wednesday (link will display calendar of the Gregorian calendar (or a Common year starting is a city and municipality in Vestfold county Norway The city was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see Formannskapsdistrikt) The latter two branch lines were abandoned in 1938. Year 1938 ( MCMXXXVIII) was a Common year starting on Saturday (link will display the full calendar of the Gregorian calendar. Brevikbanen was closed for passenger traffic in the 1960s, and completely abandoned in the 1980s with part of the tracks removed. The line Porsgrunn - Norcem Cement Factory is still used for freight trains. Porsgrunn is a town and municipality in the county of Telemark, Norway. Norcem AS is a Norwegian manufacturer of Cement, and subsidiary of HeidelbergCement.

In 2004 much of the service between Larvik and Skien was curtailed, leaving only peak-hour departures on that stretch. "MMIV" redirects here For the Modest Mouse album see " Baron von Bullshit Rides Again " Larvik is a town and municipality in the county of Vestfold, Norway. This part of the line is somewhat tortuous, and there have been plans for a tunnel, Eidangertunnelen, to shorten this leg.

Future plans

Because Vestfoldbanen sill follows the same right-of-way as it did in 1881, NSB is not able to operate trains at any higher speed, with the average operating speed being at 67 km/h. Jernbaneverket is working on plans to gradually rebuild Vestfoldbanen to double track and considerably higher speeds. A double track railway usually involves running one track in each direction compared to a single track railway where trains in both directions share the same track At the same time the motorway E18 is being built to four lanes through the county, transferring passengers from train to car. European route E18 begins at Northern Ireland, then through Scotland, England, Norway, Sweden, and Finland to end at

The upgrades will allow speeds up to 200 km/h between stations, double track between Drammen and Larvik, and single track with two crossing loops from Larvik to Porsgunn. The plans are to build lines in shorter stretches, allowing a steady increase in capacity. After completion, total travel time from Oslo to Tønsberg will be one hour (half an hour shorter than today), and travel time to Grenland will be reduced by about one hour. Some of the time reduction also comes from the construction of Askerbanen just west of Oslo.

The expansion of the line started in 1993, and in 1995 a four kilometers past Skoger was modernized. Skoger is a village located on the border between Buskerud and Vestfold counties Norway. In 2001 13 km through Sande was upgraded. 2002 saw the opening of a new crossing loop at Nykirke. Nykirke is a village in the municipality of Horten, Norway, located near the E18. This plan prioritizes parts north of Tønsberg as well as cutting times significantly between Larvik and Porsgrunn, where the line takes a long trip around, and will reduce travel time from 34 to 12 minutes. Current approved political plans include four new stretches to be completed before 2015:
