Vaseline is a genericized trademark reference to petroleum jelly. A genericized trademark (also known as a generic trademark or proprietary eponym) is a Trademark or Brand name that has become the colloquial Petroleum jelly, petrolatum or soft paraffin is a Semi-solid mixture of Hydrocarbons (with Carbon numbers mainly higher than 25 It is also a brand of skin creams, lotions, cleansers, deodorants and lubricant produced by Unilever. The first known reference to the name Vaseline was by the inventor of petroleum jelly, Robert Chesebrough in his U. Robert Augustus Chesebrough, ( January 9, 1837 – September 8, 1938) was a chemist and the inventor of petroleum jelly trade-named Vaseline S. patent: "I, Robert Chesebrough, have invented a new and useful product from petroleum which I have named Vaseline…".

The etymology of the word comes from German wasser (= water) + Greek elaeon (= oil).
