Vaseline is a genericized trademark reference to petroleum jelly. The first known reference to the name Vaseline was by the inventor of petroleum jelly, Robert Chesebrough in his U. Robert Augustus Chesebrough, ( January 9, 1837 – September 8, 1938) was a chemist and the inventor of petroleum jelly trade-named Vaseline S. patent: "I, Robert Chesebrough, have invented a new and useful product from petroleum which I have named Vaseline…".
The etymology of the word comes from German wasser (= water) + Greek elaeon (= oil).
