History
In 1202, Henry I the Bearded founded a Cistercian convent at this place at the request of his wife, the future Saint Hedwig of Andechs (canonized in 1267). Henry I the Bearded (Henryk I Brodaty Heinrich I der Bärtige 1163 &ndash 19 March 1238) of the Silesian Dukes (since the 18th century referred to as Saint Hedwig of Andechs (Hl Hedwig von Andechs Święta Jadwiga Śląska 1174 at Castle Andechs, Bavaria – 15 October 1243 at Trzebnica After Henry died in 1238 and was buried in the church, Hedwig moved to the Cistercian convent which by now was led by her daughter. She died in October 1243 and was buried there also, while some of her relics are preserved at Andechs Abbey in Bavaria. The Benedictine abbey of Andechs is a former place of Pilgrimage on a hill east of the Ammersee in the ''Landkreis'' of Starnberg ( Oberbayern
