Johnson was born in Canton, South Dakota to Ruth Jorinda Ljostveit and Vandel Charles Johnson. Canton is a city in and the County seat of Lincoln County, South Dakota, United States. [1] He was raised in Vermillion, Johnson earned a B.A. in 1969 and an M.A. in 1970, from the University of South Dakota, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. In spite of his recent illness (see "Health" section below), Johnson's chief of staff has announced they hired leading political strategist Steve Jarding for Johnson's re-election campaign for the 2008 Senate election. Senator Johnson was treated for prostate cancer in 2004 and further tests showed that he was clear of the disease. [4][5]

2008 election

Johnson's current term is up in January 2009. Sen. Johnson has stated that he will run for reelection, although, because of the severity of his illness, there is speculation that he may not run.

While Johnson was recovering, fellow Democratic senators raised funds on behalf of Johnson's reelection campaign.

Early polls show him a favorite to beat the Republican challenger in the fall. [17]

Tim Johnson has endorsed Illinois Sen. The State of Illinois ( roughly ill-i-NOY is a state of the United States of America, the 21st to be admitted to the Union. Barack Obama for the 2008 Presidential election. [18]

However, NBC News reported that Johnson's superdelegate vote will go for Hillary Clinton as he pledged earlier to support the winner of the South Dakota Primary.
