The Gate is a retail and leisure complex in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Newcastle upon Tyne ( (often shortened to Newcastle) is a city and Metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear, England England is a Country which is part of the United Kingdom. Its inhabitants account for more than 83% of the total UK population whilst its mainland The venue lends its name from the street on which it lies, Newgate Street. It is part of the historic Grainger Town area of Newcastle. Grainger Town is the historic heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It was opened on the 28th November 2002[1].

The Gate has 19 venues spread across three floors, including a 12 screen Empire Cinema and Aspers Casino. Empire Cinemas is a multiplex cinema chain in the United Kingdom. The Gate is also next to Newcastle's China town; there is an entrance on Stowell Street. The Gate building was built to replace the 35 year old, 7 storey Newgate House, which was home to the prolific music venue; The Mayfair club.

The 19,235 m², £80 million venue was built by Land Securities and the 12m tall sculpture outside, "Ellipsis Eclipses" was designed by Danny Lane[2]. Land Securities REIT ( is the largest property company in Europe and the leading British property development and investment company headquartered in central London During construction, the 24 meter high[3] glass glass façade was designed by Space Decks Limited[4]. The Odeon Cinema (now Empire) was built to replace the 72 year old cinema on Pilgrim Street[5]. Empire Cinemas is a multiplex cinema chain in the United Kingdom. The Gate provided 400 new jobs when opened and a further 600 during construction.

In 2004 BDP Lighting won a Lighting Design award for their work at The Gate[6]
