The Dakotas is a collective term used around the world that refers to the U.S. states of North Dakota and South Dakota together. A US state is any one of the fifty subnational entities of the United States of America that share Sovereignty with the federal government North Dakota ( is a state located in the Midwestern and Western regions of the United States of America. South Dakota ( is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States of America. The term has been used historically to describe the Dakota Territory, and is continued to be used to describe the collective heritage,[1] culture, geography,[2] biology,[3] sociology,[4]the economy,[5][6] and even diets[7] among the two states. Dakota Territory was the name of an organized territory of the United States that existed from 1861 to 1889

The name "Dakota" comes from the Tipi Sapa, a Native American clan that is a branch of the Lakota. Native Americans in the United States are the indigenous peoples from the regions of North America now encompassed by the continental United States The Lakota (laˈkˣota (also Teton, Tetonwan) are a Native American tribe [8]

A sub-region of the Frontier Strip, the Dakotas are also within the Midwestern United States, with the western portion comprised of high plains. The Frontier Strip refers to the six states in the United States forming a north-south line from North Dakota to Texas. This article is about a geographic region in the United States According to the Public Broadcasting Service, important areas within the Dakotas include the Black Hills, the town of Deadwood, Fort Buford, Standing Rock Reservation and Wounded Knee. The Public Broadcasting Service ( PBS) is a Non-profit Public broadcasting Television service with 354 member TV stations in the The Black Hills ( Pahá Sápa in Lakota, Moˀȯhta-voˀhonáaeva in Cheyenne) are a small isolated Mountain range rising from the Deadwood, named for the dead trees found in its Gulch, is a city in and the County seat of Lawrence County, South Dakota, Fort Buford was a former United States Army base located at the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers in the state of North Dakota. The Standing Rock Indian Reservation is a Lakota Indian reservation in North Dakota and South Dakota in the United States. [9] The Upper Missouri River and the Upper Missouri River Valley are important geological features in the area, as well. The Missouri River Valley outlines the journey of the Missouri River from its Headwaters where the Madison, Jefferson and Gallatin Rivers
