His decision to close the RSC's The Barbican Theatre and The Pit in the winter of 1990-91, was an essential act for the RSC, securing an increase in subsidy from the Arts Council. Hands once married actress Ludmila Mikaël. Their daughter, Marina Hands, is also a successful actress. Marina Hands (born January 1977 is a French stage and film actress Hands is currently married to director Emma Lucia. He has two sons named Sebastian (18) and Rupert (15), who is currently performing in Clwyd Theatr Cymru's production of Macbeth having previously performed in the theatre's 2007 production of Arcadia (play).
