The album's lead single, "Better Be Home Soon," hinted at a much darker tone than the debut album. Although it was critically acclaimed, the album did not sell as well in the U. S. as the debut. The album did better in Australia and New Zealand.

Temple of Low Men was produced by Mitchell Froom, recorded by Tchad Blake, and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. Mitchell Froom (born 1954 is an American musician and record producer Tchad Blake (born in 1955 is an American Record producer, engineer mixer and musician Bob Clearmountain is an award-winning American music engineer mixer and producer. Bassist Nick Seymour created the album cover, as he is also an accomplished artist.
