Papadopoulos was a candidate for a second term in office in the 2008 presidential election. A presidential election was held in Cyprus on 17 February 2008, with the second round held on 24 February 2008. In the first round, held on February 17, he placed third, slightly behind Dimitris Christofias and Ioannis Kasoulides with about 31.
