Takeshi's Castle (風雲!たけし城 Fūun! Takeshi Jō?, literally Operation! Takeshi Castle) was a Japanese game show that aired from 1986 to 1989 on the Tokyo Broadcasting System. Original Takeshi's Castle
The original show involved between 100 and 142 contestants whom General Tani (Hayato Tani) "forced" into a series of silly physical challenges, eliminating many of the contestants. Hayato Tani (谷 隼人 Tani Hayato) (born on September 9, 1946 as Hajime Iwatani is a Japanese Television Actor. Each show finished with a "Final Showdown" in which Count Takeshi (Kitano) was faced by the remaining contestants. If the contestants hit the paper ring on Takeshi's cart with their water guns and broke it (in later episodes replaced with lasers and a light-sensitive target), Takeshi's cart was deactivated, the castle was "taken" and the game "won". A water gun (or water pistol, squirt gun, or water blaster) is a type of Toy designed to shoot Water. A laser is a device that emits Light ( Electromagnetic radiation) through a process called Stimulated emission. The player who stopped Takeshi won one million yen (which, at the time, was roughly equivalent to $8,000). It fared best for the remaining 3 contestant; Sato Tatsuo (Student), Kurita Eikiro (Construction Worker), and Tsuwa Makato (Bartender). These were the first 3 contestants to attack Takeshi's Troops. However, all of them were immediately defeated while crawling up to Beat Takeshi's Area, up on the Castle. Despite this, Kaneko Minoru has also been revealed as the most aggressive contestant to be involved in attacking Takeshi frequently (his debut was on the second Episode where he earned his Bonus Mark despite being defeated). The first 3 Female Contestants joined in on the third Episode. Reiko Tani (University Student) was the first Female Contestant to win the First Extra Bonus on her effort, despite vanishing at the Labyrinth Maze while facing Umanosuke Ueda and Strong Kanegou. On the sixth Episode, The Great Wall was replaced by Slippery Wall, a Triangle-shaped version of The Great Wall. By the end of the show, there was the first Female Contestant to finally reach the Final Stage. Miyuki Stephenson was the only Female Contestant to make it through, whereas Mike Stephenson was the first expatriate Contestant to reach the Final Stage. Takeshi's Troops were supposedly defeated on the ninth Episode by Shiba, one of the contestants. Along with his four teammates, he drove toward Takeshi's Cart and stabbed Takeshi's Paper Ring. Knowing that Shiba shocked the audience, General Tani examined how Shiba and his friends could have defeated Takeshi's Troop. Shiba answered by saying that he actually stabbed out the Paper Ring rather than shooting it. General Tani was very disappointed and said that Shiba was not supposed to do that. As a result, all of the remaining contestants were immediately disqualified and the victory went to Takeshi's side.
Takeshi originally wanted the show to be a 'live-action Super Mario game'. Early in the series the games and production values were low budget, but later series featured extensive landscaping of a fixed campus that included large man-made lakes and extensive permanent obstacles in Yokohama, Japan at a TBS-owned property. is the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture, located in the Kantō region of the main island of Honshū and is a major commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo Area Takeshi decided the show should end while still at the height of popularity, which in Japanese television is common. - Takeshi's Gundan (Defense Troops) (たけし軍団) — The Count's guards who wore white or emerald green, seen in "Final Showdown" and other challenges, and are more popularly known as "The Emerald Guards". When Higashi became Takeshi's new advisor, Omori Utaeman took over as the leader. Other members included Matsuo Bannai, Tsunami Edamame, Yurei Yanagi (known as Joker in the UK version), Rakkyo Ide, Great Gidayu (known as Purple Ronnie or Putrid Porker in the UK version), Danken, Third Nagasima, "Rusher" Itamae, Taka Gadarukanaru, Hakase Suidobashi, Sintaru Mizushima and "Loyal" Tadajij Kikuchi. Rakkyo Ide was the bald guy in the "Monsters Special" who wore a shark outfit and suffered some serious bleeding when he fell in during Skipping Stones. These troops were also usually seen in the background behind Takeshi and his advisor during the show. Two attempts have been made to Americanize the format:
- In 1990, FOX aired a special half-hour version of the original show premise entitled King Of The Mountain. This version used the same games, but had only 10 competitors and no costumed characters to impede the players' progress. Only one episode of King Of The Mountain was produced.

The format does not follow the original Japanese format showing, General Tani's (named General Lee) troops trying to storm Takeshi's Castle. Each episode is commentated by Craig Charles and would have about seven games followed by the Final Showdown. The success of Series One was immediate with Challenge being told it was great from the first day it was shown onwards. More series were commissioned and shown over the next few months, culminating in a series of hour long specials in the Autumn of 2003, and a special highlights show, The A-Z of Takeshi's Castle, broadcast on January 1, 2004 which showed some of the best clips of the best games. Challenge have regularly been asked to consider showing unedited episodes, but as of September 2005, they decided to air MXC in the UK instead, retitled as Takeshi's Most Extreme Elimination Challenge. Recently there has been some activity at Challenge in trying to get some unedited Japanese episodes to see if it would be worth showing, but however there have been problems so far, and plans for both newly dubbed versions and unedited episodes are now on hold. Recently Challenge also attempted unsuccessfully to acquire the German DSF dub.
There are some recurring phrases that Craig Charles uses during the UK version. A constant remark of the 'Stepping Stones' being "The Ultimate Shin Shredder. " Charles also makes numerous innuendo's often saying that “the contestants have to protect their rings from being penetrated”, which is a reference to the end game where the guards have to spray water onto the contestants paper hoops (which up mounted on top of drivable buggys) in order to pierce it. Takeshi's Castle is aired on a weekly basis as opposed to the weekdays airing on Q, and is aired before Eat Bulaga on Saturdays and before SOP on Sundays. This is done to increase and improve the ratings of the succeeding shows. Takeshi's Castle started to air on GMA on December 23, 2006 with same hosts. The show aired on its last episode on May 9, 2007, and after a long break of TV experience, Joey and Ryan assumed new personalities as Master GT (later Tirso Potter) and Captain B respectively. It was temporarily replaced by "Just Joking" which starred also Joey De Leon and Ryan Yllana and other casts. On August 15, 2007, "Takeshi's Castle" returned on air once again with all new episodes and Mike "Pekto" Nacua (Cookie), John Feir (Belli) and Love Anover (replacement when either Cookie or Belli was not in) become commentators. The show is now airing at Saturdays 11:30 a. m. before "Eat Bulaga", and Sundays 11:15 a. Eat Bulaga! is a local noon-time Variety show in the Philippines produced by the Television And Production Exponents Inc m. before SOP Rules.
