Takenoko-zoku (竹の子族, "bamboo shoot kids")describes a type of dance group active from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s in Tokyo, especially in Harajuku. Bamboo is a group of Woody perennial Evergreen Plants in the True grass family Poaceae, subfamily officially, is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan and located on the eastern side of the main island Honshū. Harajuku (原宿 "meadow lodging" is the common name for the area around Harajuku Station on the Yamanote Line in the Shibuya ward The teenagers, mainly girls but often with one boy leading, were colorfully dressed and danced in a distinctive style on the sidewalk to music from stereos.

A performance of a takenoko-zoku group can be seen in Chris Marker's film Sans Soleil. Chris Marker (born 29 July 1921 is a French Writer, Photographer, Film director, Multimedia artist and documentary maker Sans Soleil ( Sunless in English) is a 1983 film by French director Chris Marker.
