Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy, both formerly of Gong, formed System 7 after hearing the likes of The Orb playing Hillage's 1979 ambient record Rainbow Dome Musick. Steve Hillage is a British musician best known as a guitarist Miquette Giraudy is a keyboard player best known for her work in Gong and with her partner Steve Hillage. Gong is a progressive / Psychedelic rock band formed by Australian Musician Daevid Allen. The Orb are an English Electronic music group known for popularising Chill out music in the 1990s and spawning the genre of Ambient house. Rainbow Dome Musick - released 1979 Contributing artists Steve Hillage Miquette Girandy Rupert Atwill They soon became part of the underground dance scene in London. While Hillage and Giraudy form the core of System 7, it is more of an extended collaboratory project with artists such as Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, Derrick May, Alex Paterson (of The Orb), and Youth. Carl Craig is a Detroit -based producer of Techno music, and is considered to be one of the most important names in the Detroit second generation of techno producers Laurent Garnier (born February 1, 1966) is a French Techno music producer and DJ. Derrick May, also known as Mayday and Rhythim is Rhythim, is an Electronic musician from Detroit Michigan U Alex Paterson ( Duncan Robert Alex Paterson also known and abbreviated as Dr Alex Paterson, born 15 October 1959 near Battersea in Martin Glover, also known as Youth, (born 27 December 1960) is an influential Record producer and a founding member and Bassist of Unusually for an ambient/dance band, System 7 makes extensive use of Hillage's guitars.

Hillage and Giraudy have also launched a spin-off project called Mirror System, "the new vehicle for developing the chilled & downtempo dimensions of our music. " [1] They have also worked under the name Groovy Intent.
