Stump Cross Caverns is a limestone cave system in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, England. Limestone is a Sedimentary rock composed largely of the Mineral Calcite ( Calcium carbonate: CaCO3 Nidderdale is one of the Yorkshire Dales (although outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park in North Yorkshire, England. North Yorkshire is a non-metropolitan or shire county located in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England, and a ceremonial county in England is a Country which is part of the United Kingdom. Its inhabitants account for more than 83% of the total UK population whilst its mainland

The caves were discovered in 1860 by miners prospecting for lead seams in the Yorkshire Dales. The caves have been open to the public for many years, although the cave system is much more extensive than the show caves, extending more than 6 km.

World record

Geoff Workman set the world record for the longest time spent underground, at Stump Cross Caverns in 1963. He spent 105 days underground as part of an investigation into the effect on the body of deprivation of the day and night cycle.
