Background

According to White, the idea for this story came in a dream while he was sleeping on the train.

Many people expected a sequel, but none was ever written.

The reason for the book's abrupt ending was White's hypochondria. Hypochondriasis (or hypochondria, sometimes referred to as health phobia) refers to an excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness He thought he was going to die soon, so he ended the book in order to get it published before his death.

Quote

"When Mrs. Frederick C. Little's second son arrived, everybody noticed that he was not much bigger than a mouse. "
