Brooker came through the youth system at Watford before joining Port Vale, initially on loan, in January 2001. In September 2004 he was sold to Bristol City and was both player of the season and top scorer in the 2005–06 season with 16 league goals. In addition, Brooker was appointed club captain in 2005. He is contracted until the summer of 2009.

On 1 September 2006, Brooker was sentenced to prison for 28 days for his part in a nightclub brawl, which also saw team mates Bradley Orr and David Partridge imprisoned.
