Biography

Stephen William Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 to Frank Hawking, a research biologist, and Isobel Hawking. Events 871 - Battle of Ashdown - Ethelred of Wessex defeats a Danish invasion army Year 1942 ( MCMXLII) was a Common year starting on Thursday (the link will display the full 1942 calendar of the Gregorian calendar. Research is defined as Human activity based on Intellectual application in the investigation of Matter. A biologist is a Scientist devoted to and producing results in Biology through the study of Organisms Typically biologists study organisms and their relationship He had two younger sisters, Philippa and Mary, and an adopted brother, Edward. [4] Though Hawking’s parents had their home in North London, they moved to Oxford while Isobel was pregnant with Stephen, desiring a safer location for the birth of their first child (London was under attack at the time by the Luftwaffe). In 1950, Hawking and his family moved to St Albans in Hertfordshire where he attended St Albans High School for Girls between 1950 to 1953. History By c1100 the School had built for itself such a reputation that the Norman scholar Geoffrey de Gorham applied for the post of Master [4] When asked later to name a teacher who had inspired him, Hawking named his Mathematics teacher, "Mr Tahta". Dikran "Dick" Tahta ( August 7, 1928 &ndash December 2, 2006) was a British Mathematician, Teacher [7] He maintains his connection with the school, giving his name to one of the four houses and to an extracurricular science lecture series. He has visited to deliver one of the lectures and has also granted a lengthy interview to pupils working on the school magazine, the Albanian.

He was always interested in science. [4] He enrolled at University College, Oxford with the intent of studying mathematics, although his father preferred he go into medicine. Jane Hawking, née Wilde, Hawking’s first wife, with whom he had three children, cared for him until 1991 when the couple separated, reportedly due to the pressures of fame and his increasing disability. Hawking married his nurse, Elaine Mason (who was also the previous wife of David Mason, designer of the first version of Hawking’s talking computer), in 1995. In October 2006, Hawking filed for divorce. [8]

In 1999, Jane Hawking published a memoir, Music to Move the Stars, detailing her own long-term relationship with a family friend whom she later married. Hawking’s daughter Lucy Hawking is a novelist. "Many people have asked me why I am taking this flight. Futurists, or futurologists, are those who speculate about the future I am doing it for many reasons. First of all, I believe that life on Earth is at an ever increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster such as sudden nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus, or other dangers. I think the human race has no future if it doesn’t go into space. I therefore want to encourage public interest in space. "[13]

Research fields

Hawking’s principal fields of research are theoretical cosmology and quantum gravity. Physical cosmology, as a branch of Astronomy, is the study of the large-scale structure of the Universe and is concerned with fundamental questions about its Quantum gravity is the field of Theoretical physics attempting to unify Quantum mechanics, which describes three of the fundamental forces of nature

In the late 1960s, he and his Cambridge friend and colleague, Roger Penrose, applied a new, complex mathematical model they had created from Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity. The 1960s decade refers to the years from the beginning of 1960 to the end of 1969 Sir Roger Penrose, PhD, OM, FRS (born 8 August 1931) is an English Mathematical physicist and Emeritus Albert Einstein ( German: ˈalbɐt ˈaɪ̯nʃtaɪ̯n; English: ˈælbɝt ˈaɪnstaɪn (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955 was a German -born theoretical General relativity or the general theory of relativity is the geometric theory of Gravitation published by Albert Einstein in 1916 [14] This led, in 1970, to Hawking proving the first of many singularity theorems; such theorems provide a set of sufficient conditions for the existence of a singularity in space-time. He supplied a mathematical proof, along with Brandon Carter, Werner Israel and D. In Mathematics, a proof is a convincing demonstration (within the accepted standards of the field that some Mathematical statement is necessarily true Brandon Carter (born 1942 is an Australian theoretical physicist, best known for his work on the properties of Black holes and for being the first Werner Israel, OC, FRSC, FRS (born October 4, 1931) is a Canadian physicist Robinson, of John Wheeler’s “No-Hair Theorem” – namely, that any black hole is fully described by the three properties of mass, angular momentum, and electric charge. John Archibald Wheeler ( July 9, 1911 &ndash April 13, 2008) was an eminent American Theoretical physicist. The no-hair theorem in Astrophysics postulates that all Black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations of Gravitation and Electromagnetism Mass is a fundamental concept in Physics, roughly corresponding to the Intuitive idea of how much Matter there is in an object In Physics, the angular momentum of a particle about an origin is a vector quantity equal to the mass of the particle multiplied by the Cross product of the position Electric charge is a fundamental conserved property of some Subatomic particles which determines their Electromagnetic interaction.

Hawking also suggested that, upon analysis of gamma ray emissions, after the Big Bang, primordial or mini black holes were formed. Gamma rays (denoted as &gamma) are a form of Electromagnetic radiation or light emission of frequencies produced by sub-atomic particle interactions The Big Bang is the cosmological model of the Universe that is best supported by all lines of scientific evidence and Observation. A black hole is a theoretical region of space in which the Gravitational field is so powerful that nothing not even Electromagnetic radiation (e With Bardeen and Carter, he proposed the four laws of black hole mechanics, drawing an analogy with thermodynamics. In Physics, thermodynamics (from the Greek θερμη therme meaning " Heat " and δυναμις dynamis meaning " In 1974, he calculated that black holes should thermally create and emit subatomic particles, known today as Hawking radiation, until they exhaust their energy and evaporate. A subatomic particle is an elementary or composite Particle smaller than an Atom. Hawking radiation (also known as Bekenstein-Hawking radiation) is a Thermal radiation with a black body spectrum predicted to be emitted by Black holes [16]

In collaboration with Jim Hartle, Hawking developed a model in which the Universe had no boundary in space-time, replacing the initial singularity of the classical Big Bang models with a region akin to the North pole: one cannot travel North of the North pole, there is no boundary there. James Burkett Hartle is an American Physicist. He has been a professor of physics at the University of California Santa Barbara since 1966 and he The Big Bang is the cosmological model of the Universe that is best supported by all lines of scientific evidence and Observation. While originally the no-boundary proposal predicted a closed Universe, discussions with Neil Turok led to the realisation that the no-boundary proposal is also consistent with a Universe which is not closed. The shape of the Universe is an informal name for a subject of investigation within Physical cosmology which describes the Geometry of the Universe Neil Geoffrey Turok holds the Chair of Mathematical Physics (1967 at Cambridge University.

Among Hawking’s many other scientific investigations, included are the study of: quantum cosmology, cosmic inflation, helium production in anisotropic Big Bang universes, large N cosmology, the density matrix of the universe, topology and structure of the universe, baby universes, Yang-Mills instantons and the S matrix; anti de Sitter space, quantum entanglement and entropy; the nature of space and time, including the arrow of time; spacetime foam, string theory, supergravity, Euclidean quantum gravity, the gravitational Hamiltonian; Brans-Dicke and Hoyle-Narlikar theories of gravitation; gravitational radiation, and wormholes. Losing an old bet

Hawking was in the news in July 2004 for presenting a new theory about black holes which goes against his own long-held belief about their behavior, thus losing a bet he made with Kip Thorne and John Preskill of Caltech. In 1997 the physics theorists Kip Thorne, Stephen Hawking and John Preskill made a public bet on the outcome of the Black hole A black hole is a theoretical region of space in which the Gravitational field is so powerful that nothing not even Electromagnetic radiation (e A scientific wager is a wager whose outcome is settled by Scientific method. Kip Stephen Thorne (born June 1, 1940) is an American theoretical physicist, known for his prolific contributions in gravitation physics John Phillip Preskill (born 19 January, 1953) is an American Theoretical physicist and a Professor at the California Institute The California Institute of Technology (commonly referred to as Caltech) is a private, Coeducational research university located in Pasadena Classically, it can be shown that information crossing the event horizon of a black hole is lost to our universe, and that thus all black holes are identical beyond their mass, electrical charge and angular velocity (the “no hair theorem”). In General relativity, an event horizon is a boundary in Spacetime, an area surrounding a Black hole or a Wormhole, inside which events cannot Electric charge is a fundamental conserved property of some Subatomic particles which determines their Electromagnetic interaction. Do not confuse with Angular frequency The unit for angular velocity is rad/s The no-hair theorem in Astrophysics postulates that all Black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations of Gravitation and Electromagnetism The problem with this theorem is that it implies the black hole will emit the same radiation regardless of what goes into it, and as a consequence that if a pure quantum state is thrown into a black hole, an “ordinary” mixed state will be returned. Radiation, as in Physics, is Energy in the form of waves or moving Subatomic particles emitted by an atom or other body as it changes from a higher energy This runs counter to the rules of quantum mechanics and is known as the black hole information paradox. The black hole information paradox results from the combination of Quantum mechanics and General relativity.

Hawking had earlier speculated that the singularity at the centre of a black hole could form a bridge to a “baby universe” into which the lost information could pass; such theories have been very popular in science fiction. A gravitational singularity (sometimes spacetime singularity) is approximately a place where quantities which are used to measure the Gravitational field become But according to Hawking’s new idea, presented at the 17th International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation, on 21 July 2004 in Dublin, Ireland, black holes eventually transmit, in a garbled form, information about all matter they swallow:

The Euclidean path integral over all topologically trivial metrics can be done by time slicing and so is unitary when analytically continued to the Lorentzian. In Complex analysis, a branch of Mathematics, analytic continuation is a technique to extend the domain of definition of a given Analytic function. The Cauchy–Lorentz distribution, named after Augustin Cauchy and Hendrik Lorentz, is a continuous Probability distribution. On the other hand, the path integral over all topologically non-trivial metrics is asymptotically independent of the initial state. An asymptote of a real-valued function y=f(x is a curve which describes the behavior of f as either x or y goes to infinity Thus the total path integral is unitary and information is not lost in the formation and evaporation of black holes. In General relativity, an event horizon is a boundary in Spacetime, an area surrounding a Black hole or a Wormhole, inside which events cannot [18]

Having concluded that information is conserved, Hawking conceded his bet in Preskill’s favour, awarding him Total Baseball, The Ultimate Baseball Encyclopedia. Thorne, however, remained unconvinced of Hawking’s proof and declined to contribute to the award. [19] Another older bet – about the existence of black holes – was described by Hawking as an “insurance policy” of sorts. To quote from his book, A Brief History of Time:

This was a form of insurance policy for me. I have done a lot of work on black holes, and it would all be wasted if it turned out that black holes do not exist. But in that case, I would have the consolation of winning my bet, which would win me four years of the magazine Private Eye. Private Eye is a fortnightly British satirical Magazine, edited by Ian Hislop. If black holes do exist, Kip will get one year of Penthouse. Cygnus X-1 (abbreviated Cyg X-1) in the Constellation Cygnus. By now, I would say that we are about 95 % certain, but the bet has yet to be settled.

—Stephen Hawking, A Brief History of Time (1988)[1]

Hawking is severely disabled by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS (a type of motor neurone disease); this condition is commonly known in the United States as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ( ALS, sometimes called Maladie de Charcot, or in the United States Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a progressive The motor neurone diseases (or motor neuron diseases) (MND are a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy Motor neurones the cells that control voluntary Henry Louis "Lou" Gehrig ( June 19 1903  – June 2 1941) born Ludwig Heinrich Gehrig, was an American

When he was young, he enjoyed riding horses and playing with other children. At Oxford, he coxed a rowing team, which, he stated, helped relieve his immense boredom at the university. In a crew, the coxswain (or simply the cox) is the member who sits in the Stern (except in Bowloaders facing the bow steers the boat and Symptoms of the disorder first appeared while he was enrolled at Cambridge. The University of Cambridge (often Cambridge University) located in Cambridge, England, is the second-oldest university in the He lost balance and fell down a flight of stairs, hitting his head. Worried of losing his genius, he took the Mensa International test to verify that his intellectual abilities were intact. Mensa is the largest oldest and most famous high-IQ society in the world The diagnosis came when Hawking was 21, shortly before his first marriage, and doctors said he would not survive more than two or three years.

Hawking gradually lost the use of his arms, legs, and voice, and is now almost completely paralysed. During a visit to the research centre CERN in Geneva in 1985, Hawking contracted pneumonia, which in his condition was life-threatening. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire known as CERN Geneva (Genève is the second-most populous city in Switzerland (after Zürich) and is the most populous city of Romandy (the French -speaking Pneumonia is an inflammatory illness of the Lung. Frequently it is described as lung Parenchyma / alveolar inflammation and abnormal It resulted in acute difficulty of breathing, which could only be overcome through a tracheotomy by which Stephen Hawking lost his natural speech ability. Tracheotomy and tracheostomy are Surgical procedures on the neck to open a direct airway through an incision in the trachea (the windpipe He has since used an electronic voice synthesizer to communicate. Speech synthesis is the artificial production of human speech. The voice synthesizer, which has an American accent, is of a model that is no longer produced. Asked why he has still kept it after so many years, Hawking mentioned that he has not heard a voice he likes better and because he identifies with it. Hawking is said to be looking for a replacement since, other than being obsolete, the synthesizer (a DECtalk DTC01) is now considered large and fragile. DECtalk was a Speech synthesizer and Text-to-speech technology developed by Digital Equipment Corporation in the early 1980s based largely on the work However, as of present, finding a software alternative has been difficult. In Hawking's many media appearances, he appears to speak fluently through his synthesizer, but in reality, creating the text is a tedious and long process. Hawking's setup uses a T9-like entry system, by which he is required to enter only the first few characters of a word, but even so, using only his cheek, it takes a while to construct sentences. T9, which stands for Text on 9 keys, is a patented Predictive text technology for Mobile phones developed by Tegic Communications, recently His speeches are prepared in advance, but having a live conversation with him provides insight as to the complexity and work involved in his responses. During a TED Talk, a posed question took 7 minutes to answer. [20]

Despite his disease, he describes himself as “lucky" – not only has the slow progress of his disease provided time to make influential discoveries, it has also afforded time to have, in his own words, “a very attractive family”. [21] When Jane was asked why she decided to marry a man with a 3-year life expectancy, she responded: “Those were the days of atomic gloom and doom, so we all had a rather short life expectancy. "

Computer

The computer system attached to his wheelchair is operated by Hawking via an infra-red 'blink switch' clipped onto his glasses. A wheelchair is a wheeled Mobility device in which the user sits Infrared ( IR) radiation is Electromagnetic radiation whose Wavelength is longer than that of Visible light, but shorter than that of By scrunching his right cheek up, he is able to talk, compose speeches and research papers, browse the World Wide Web, and write e-mails. The World Wide Web (commonly shortened to the Web) is a system of interlinked Hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. The system also uses radio transmission to provide control over doors in his home and office. His computer was created by an American engineer. He once joked that his computer "had an American accent. "

Hawking receives a new computer every 18-24 months donated by Intel. The latest computer was donated in June of 2007 and is based on the Centrino chipset. Centrino is a platform- Marketing initiative from Intel. It is not a mobile CPU - rather the term covers a particular combination of mainboard Chipset It consists of two pieces, a rear chassis which houses a single 300 watt hour battery, a laptop computer, and various external peripherals, and a front chassis, which houses a touchscreen LCD and speakers which project his hardware-synthesized voice. The two chassis are connected via a custom-designed umbilical cable which allows power and electrical signals to travel back and forth. Hawking’s computer can run for up to 7 hours without needing a recharge, or be switched to run directly from his wheelchair battery when needed. [22]

The computer utilizes a wireless data card that runs on mobile phone networks. This allows Hawking to check his email and browse the web while away from a wireless LAN. Hawking can also make and receive voice phone calls via a mobile phone with an external microphone in front of his computer speakers.

Hawking’s belief that the lay person should have access to his work led him to write a series of popular science books in addition to his academic work. The first of these, A Brief History of Time, was published on April 1, 1988 by Hawking, his family and friends, and some leading physicists.
