The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Stange (Norse Stangir), since the first church was built here. The North Germanic languages or Scandinavian languages make up one of the three branches of the Germanic languages, a sub-family of the Indo-European languages The name is the plural form of stong f 'bar, pole, rod'.
