It was a founding member of the Football League of Ireland in 1921 and became the first league champions that season. Newcastlewest FC (originally called Newcastle United are a football club from the town of Newcastlewest in Co In 1995 the club was taken over by a consortium with high ambitions, however only one year later, just before the start of the 1996/97 season, they pulled out of the league, unable to meet their financial responsibilities. They were replaced by St. Francis F.C.
