For the purposes of the London Plan, the South London sub-region consists of Bromley, Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Richmond and Sutton. The Festival of Britain was a national exhibition which opened in London and around Britain in May 1951 The London Plan is a planning document written by the Mayor of London in the United Kingdom and published by the Greater London Authority. [4] In 2001 this area had a population of 1,329,000. [5] This definition is used by organisations such as Connexions. Connexions is a UK governmental careers counselling and advice service for young people aged thirteen to nineteen created in 2000 following the Learning and Skills Act [6]
Colloquial use
Aside from the official definitions, South London refers to areas south of Central London and the River Thames. The term Central London refers to the districts of London England which are considered closest to the centre This area overlaps the informal Central, South East and South West London areas. Some of these districts are included in the South Eastern and South Western postcode areas.
