The term ski lift can refer to many different types of uphill transport, in three main classes:

Lift systems and networks

The network lifts at a ski resort can be arranged in several patterns depending on the size and topography of the area. Armenia (Հայաստան transliterated: Hayastan,) officially the Republic of Armenia (Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն Hayastani An aerial lift is a means of transport in which gondolas or open chairs are hauled above the ground by means of a cable. An aerial tramway is a type of Aerial lift in which a cabin is suspended from a cable and is pulled by another cable A Funifor is a type of Aerial lift or Aerial tramway with two guide ropes and a haul rope loop per cabin A funitel is a type of Aerial lift, generally used to transport skiers A gondola lift is a type of Aerial lift, often called a cable car, which consists of a loop of Steel cable that is strung between two stations The Telemix, also called a hybrid lift or chondola ( Portmanteau of chair and gondola is a relatively new innovation in the world of Ski lifts A detachable chairlift or high-speed chairlift is a type of passenger Aerial lift, which like a fixed-grip Chairlift, consists of numerous chairs A chairlift (technically an elevated passenger ropeway is a type of Aerial lift, which consists of a continuously circulating Steel cable loop strung A surface lift is a mechanical system used to transport Skiers and Snowboarders uphill A T-bar lift, also called T-bar, is a mechanised system for transporting skiers and snowboarders uphill along the surface of the slope A J-bar (in some regions L-bar) is a type of Surface lift invented in the 1940sfor Ski area passenger transport A platter lift (or platter pull) is a Surface lift, a mechanized system for pulling skiers and snowboarders uphill along the surface of the slope A ski tow, also called rope tow or handle tow, is a mechanised system for pulling skiers and Snowboarders uphill A magic carpet (also carpet lift) is a type of surface lift (like Rope tows T-bar lifts and Platter lifts installed at Ski areas to A cable railway (also known as an Incline or Inclined plane) is a steeply graded Railway that uses a cable or A funicular, also known as a funicular railway, incline, inclined railway, inclined plane, or cliff railway, is a type of self-contained A transport network, or transportation network in American English is typically a network of roads streets pipes aqueducts power lines or nearly any structure which permits A ski area is a developed recreational facility usually on a Mountain or large Hill, containing ski trails and vital supporting services A pattern, from the French patron, is a theme of recurring events or objects sometimes referred to as elements of a set Topography ( topo-, "place" and graphia, "writing" is the study of Earth 's Surface features or those of Planets Several lifts may be arranged radially outward from a common base area, with top stations along surrounding peaks and ridges. Lifts may also run radially inward from several base stations to a common summit area. In topography a summit is a point on a surface which is higher in Elevation than all points immediately adjacent to Ski areas located along the face of a long ridge may simply have numerous lifts running roughly parallel, while many ski areas have two or more lifts in parallel in high-traffic areas for increased capacity. A small percentage of ski areas have lifts which cross one another, usually with an aerial lift crossing above a surface lift and more rarely with two aerial lifts crossing at different heights above the ground. A cross is a geometrical figure consisting of two lines or bars perpendicular to each other dividing one or two of the lines in half

Small ski areas with only a handul of lifts typically follow one of these simple arrangements. Larger ski areas have combinations of these basic patterns, often in a tiered arrangement by elevation. Lifts run from one or more base areas to various midstations, from which other lifts connect to higher terrain. Very large ski areas (with dozens of lifts) may have three or more tiers of lifts between the valley and the highest summits. In such cases, lengthy aerial tramways or gondolas are often used to span across several tiers at once, to allow rapid access to the upper slopes from the base. An aerial tramway is a type of Aerial lift in which a cabin is suspended from a cable and is pulled by another cable A gondola lift is a type of Aerial lift, often called a cable car, which consists of a loop of Steel cable that is strung between two stations
