Shuichi is a classmate of Izumi Sano and Mizuki Ashiya, and the trio frequently gets together to participate in Osaka High's activities. Izumi Sano (佐野 泉 Sano Izumi) is one of the main characters in the manga series Hana-Kimi (shorthand for Hanazakari no Kimitachi e Mizuki Ashiya (芦屋 瑞希 Ashiya Mizuki) is the heroine in the Shōjo Manga Hana-Kimi ( Hanazakari no Kimitachi e They also hang around with the rest of their group. Being a loud and brash boy, Shuichi offers a contrast to the stoic Izumi. This contrast is deliberate, for he soon develops feelings for Mizuki. However, he thought that she's a guy, due to her disguise, and so thought that he was gay himself.
Like Izumi, Shuichi is an athlete. He is a member of the soccer team. His career was once under threat when he was falsely accused of cheating during an exam. Luckily, with the help of the three dorm leaders, he managed to clear his name.
Although that was the case, usually, he is on rather poor terms with Minami Nanba, the student leader in charge of his dorm. Minami would frequently tell him to shut up during dorm meetings. Also, he is often kicked in the head by Hokuto Umeda, the school doctor who happens to be Minami's uncle.
