Since the early 1970s the shire has undergone tremendous population growth and as at 2006, Melton is one of Victoria's fastest growing local government areas along with neighbouring Wyndham.
The shire's area is divided into seven wards, each of which elects one councillor. The councillors elect a Mayor from among the council's members.
