The Shannon Estuary is a large estuary where the River Shannon flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Historically, the estuary was used by transatlantic seaplanes as a first landfall or refuelling point in the 1930s and 1940s. A flying boat is a specialised form of Aircraft that is designed to take off from and land on water using its Fuselage as a floating hull. In 1945, Shannon Airport opened on the northern shores and the estuary as a landing site gradually fell into disuse. Shannon International Airport, or Aerfort na Sionnainne in Irish is one of Ireland's primary three airports (along with Dublin Airport and Cork Airport The estuary is still used by tankers to deliver fuel to the Shannon Airport Jetty.
