Sapphire is a saturated shade of blue, referring to the gem of the same name. In modern usage, 'sapphire' refers to a deep vibrant blue; however, early eighteenth century colors called 'sapphire' were a very light pale blue, probably closer to periwinkle. Periwinkle is a desaturated Color in the Blue / Indigo / violet family
