The San Antonio River is a major waterway that originates in central Texas near San Antonio and follows a roughly southeastern path through the state. History

The first documented record of the river was from Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca on his explorations of Texas in 1535. Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca ( Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, ca Texas ( is a state geographically located in the South Central United States and is also known as the Lone Star State. The river was later named after San Antonio de Padua by the first governor of Spanish Texas, Domingo Terán de los Ríos in 1691. Saint Anthony ( August 15, 1195 – June 13, 1231) also venerated as Saint Anthony of Lisbon and Saint Anthony of Padua, Spanish Texas was one of the interior provinces of New Spain from 1690 until 1821 Domingo Terán de los Ríos served as the first governor of Spanish Texas from 1691 to 1692 [3] During the Texas Revolution, the river was host to several major conflicts, including the Battle of Concepcion, the Grass Fight, the siege of Bexar, the Goliad Campaign, and the Battle of the Alamo. The Texas Revolution or Texas War of Independence was fought from October 2 1835 to April 21 1836 between Mexico and the Texas (Tejas portion of the Mexican The Grass Fight was a small battle during the Texas Revolution, fought between the Mexican Army and the Texian Army. The Goliad Campaign refers to a series of battles which occurred in 1836 as part of the Texas Revolution, which ultimately led to the Goliad massacre The Battle of the Alamo was fought in February and March 1836 in San Antonio, Texas.

Five major 18th century Spanish missions are lined up along the historical course of the river, including Mission Espada, Mission Concepcion, Mission San José, and Mission San Juan.
