The SERE Patch was designed with meaning. It is green for the freedom, which we all cherish. It is halved with a yellow strip to represent that Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape requires caution. The knife is the basic survival tool and reminds us of our obligation to our country, family and selves to survive and return with honor. The barbed wire is for captivity, it is broken, one can survive and regain their freedom. The Chinese word "Tiger" represents a saying on ancient maps "Here there be tigers" the process leads to the unknown and possibly dangerous territories of one's life. Here Be Dragons is a Historical novel by Sharon Penman, first published in 1985. The letters SERE are self eveident and are written in yellow, also signifying to use caution and it is surrounded by black to honor those who gave their all in their service to their country.
The Code of Conduct is at the heart of SERE training. The Code of Conduct is a guide for Service Members and sets the standard of behavior by which they are to live in uncertain and hostile environments. SERE training provides the skills Service Members employ to live up to the Code of Conduct.
Code of Conduct for Members of the United States Armed Forces:
I- I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.
II- I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command I will never surrender those under my command while they still have the means to resist.
III- If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.
IV- If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information nor take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them up in every way.
V- When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause.
VI- I will never forget that I am an American, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America. [1]

The SERE training curriculum can be divided into three parts: "survival and evasion", "resistance and escape", and "water survival".
The majority of SERE focuses on survival and evasion. Skills taught include wilderness survival and woodcraft (encompassing a wide scope of natural climates), emergency first aid (a variant of battlefield first aid), land navigation, camouflage techniques, evasion techniques, communication protocols, and the construction of improvised tools. The term woodcraft denotes skills and experience in matters relating to living and thriving in the woods — such as Hunting, Fishing, and Camping Wilderness first aid is the specific discipline of First aid which relates to care in remote areas where Emergency medical services will be difficult to obtain or Orienteering is a family of Sports that require Navigational skills using a Map and Compass, usually in combination with Point to point racing Camouflage is a method of cryptic or concealing coloration that allows an otherwise visible Organism This list is not comprehensive, and some of the subject matter has been classified by the United States Government. The "Resistance and Escape" component of SERE survival in captivity and resistance to enemy exploitation. It is based on the experiences of former American and Allied POW's as they were treated at the hands of the enemy. The majority of this portion of the course is classified Secret by the United States government. However, several official sites exist to give a general overview of the curricula. The training is designed to allow the student to utilize their training in a realistic manner and then upon debriefing, discover their weaknesses and how to better utilize their trained skills. The SERE students are not taught how to apply coercive techniques or interrogate enemy prisoners of war, as most are aircrews and would not normally be involved with handling enemy POWs.
The remaining portion of SERE is Water Survival, a separate Professional Military Education (PME) course lasting two days and typically attended after the main SERE course. During the water survival portion, students are taught skills to enhance their ability to survive in an aquatic environment. Academic subjects covered include emergency first aid (tailored to an aquatic environment), communication protocols, ocean ecology, and equipment maintenance. First aid is the provision of initial care for an Illness or Injury. Ecology (from Greek grc οἶκος oikos, "house(hold" and grc -λογία -logia) is the scientific study of The course also requires students to become familiar with and display proficiency using aquatic survival gear.
SERE training is presented at four levels:
One of the U. S. Air Force's SERE training programs was conducted at the United States Air Force Academy from the late 1960s until 1995. The United States Air Force Academy ( USAFA or Air Force) is an accredited college for the undergraduate education of officers for the United States Air Because a large number of pilots and other aircrew members graduated from the academy, it was more efficient for the Air Force to send all cadets through SERE training while they were still at the academy. Cadets would normally complete the training during the summer between their fourth-class (freshman) and third-class (sophomore) years. A number of selected second-class (junior) and first-class (senior) cadets would serve each year as SERE training cadre under the supervision of enlisted Air Force SERE instructors. An enlisted rank in the Military of the United States is any rank below a commissioned officer.
As a result of POWs' experiences during Operation Desert Storm, sexual assault resistance was added to the SERE curriculum. However, some of the training scenarios allegedly were taken too far by SERE cadet members at the academy during practical portions of the program. In 1995, the ABC television news program 20/20 reported that as many as 24 male and female cadets in 1993 had allegedly been sexually assaulted at the Academy during SERE training. The American Broadcasting Company ( ABC) is an American Television network. 20/20 is an American television Newsmagazine broadcast on ABC since June 6, 1978. Sexual assault is any Assault of a sexual nature on another person One of the cadets sued the government, which eventually settled for a reported $3 million in damages. [3]
As a result of the scandal, the SERE program at the Academy was reduced to the survival and evasion portions only, and called Combat Survival Training (CST). All graduates going on to aircrew positions were then required to attend the resistance portion of the training at Fairchild Air Force Base before reporting to an operational flying unit. Fairchild AFB is a United States Air Force base under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command (AMC The CST program was discontinued entirely in 2004. The Air Force Academy is currently preparing for the return of the SERE program in the summer of 2008. The curriculum of the revived program will contain some resistance elements, but will not contain sexual assault resistance. [4]
