Early life

Pérez was born in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick, the daughter of Puerto Rican parents Lydia Perez (née Fontanez), a singer, and Ismael Serrano, a merchant marine. Brooklyn (named after the Dutch town Breukelen) is one of the five boroughs of New York City. Bushwick is a neighborhood in the northeastern part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn.
