After his sports career ended, Reed was a standout teacher in the La Porte Community School Corporation. He taught 8th grade history at Paul F. Boston Middle School in La Porte, Indiana for many years. He retired from teaching in 2007. He was always extremeley modest about his baseball and basketball playing days, and many students were unaware of his past exploits.
