Ron G. Mason was one of the oceanographers whose pioneering Cold War geomagnetic survey work lead to the discovery of magnetic stripes around the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Oceanography (from the greek words Ωκεανός meaning Ocean and γράφω meaning to write also called oceanology or Cold War is the state of conflict tension and competition that existed between the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR and their respective allies from the Earth 's magnetic field (and the surface magnetic field) is approximately a Magnetic dipole, with one pole near the North pole (see The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR is a Mid-ocean ridge, a Divergent tectonic plate boundary located along the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.
