Early years

Roger Bruce Chaffee was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, attended Illinois Institute of Technology and earned a B. Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT is a private PhD-granting university located in the greater Chicago Illinois area with programs in Engineering, Science, S. in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University in 1957. He was married to Martha Horn Chaffee, and had two children, Sheryl and Stephen. Chaffee was an Eagle Scout and a member of Phi Kappa Sigma. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA Phi Kappa Sigma ( ΦΚΣ) is an international all-male college leadership and social fraternity.

Military and NASA career

Chaffee was a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy. He was chosen in the third group of astronauts in 1963 and had made no spaceflights before being selected as lunar module pilot for the first Apollo program flight.

Chaffee died along with fellow astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom and Edward White in the Apollo 1 fire at Cape Kennedy. Virgil Ivan Grissom, more widely known as Gus Grissom, ( 3 April 1926 – 27 January 1967) was one of the original NASA Edward Higgins White II (LtCol, USAF ( November 14, 1930  &ndash January 27, 1967) was a United States Air Force officer and Cape Canaveral from the Spanish Cabo Cañaveral, is a headland in Brevard County Florida, United States, near the center of that Chaffee and Grissom are both buried in Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery, while White is buried at West Point Cemetery.
