Riding Mill is notable as the location of Riding Mill pumping station. Up until here the water released from Kielder Water uses the River Tyne but at Riding Mill it is pumped over the hills to Teesside as well as to the rest of Tyne and Wear. Kielder Water is a large man-made Reservoir in Northumberland in North East England. Teesside is the name given to the Conurbation in the North East of England made up of the towns of Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees The only remaining village pub is 'The Wellington' as the two others have closed (The Railway and the The Broomhaugh).
Until 2006 there was a Post Office on the main road. Bobby's General Stores remains open for business.
As you leave the village heading towards Hexham, Hollin Hill Terrace is situated on the left. Very little information is available on these eight dwellings but they are a fine example of Victorian architecture. This terrace was not shown on maps of the area prior to 1850, but appear on a map dated between 1850/1894.
Lilian Bowes-Lyon - (1895 - 1949)
A cousin of the late Queen Mother, Lilian Bowes Lyon was born and grew up at Ridley Hall, near Riding Mill. Lilian Bowes-Lyon (or Bowes Lyon) (1895 - 1949 was a British poet She wrote much of Northumberland, and poem titles include 'Allendale Dog' and 'Northumbrian farm'.
