Richard John Trowbridge was born on 21 January 1920 to a farming family[2] in the county of Hampshire, England. From 1956 to 1958 he captained the destroyer HMS Carysfort[4] in the Mediterranean, and following this served as the second-in-command of the cruiser HMS Bermuda from 1958 to 1959.
