Richard Lawrence "Dick" Saslaw (born February 5, 1940) is a Democratic member of the Senate of Virginia, representing the 35th District since 1980 and serving as the Minority Leader since 1998. Saslaw served as Senate Democratic Minority Leader from 1996 through 2007, and was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1976 through 1980. In the 2007 Virginia legislative elections, Democrats gained a majority by picking up four seats in the Virginia State Senate. The Democratic Party is one of two major Political parties in the United States, the other being the Republican Party. Senate of Virginia is the Upper house of the Virginia General Assembly. Senator Saslaw was named Majority Leader when the Democrats assumed control of the chamber in 2008.
