Early life
Grant was born Richard Grant Esterhuysen in Mbabane, Swaziland. Mbabane, with an estimated population of 70000 (2003 is the Capital of Swaziland. The Kingdom of Swaziland is a country located in Southern Africa centred at approximately 26o49'S 31o38'E He adopted the name Richard E Grant as an adult when he moved to the UK and registered with the British Actors' Equity Association. Equity (formerly British Actors' Equity Association) is the Actors Trade union in the United Kingdom His father was Henrik Esterhuysen, a head of education for the British government administration in Swaziland. The Kingdom of Swaziland is a country located in Southern Africa centred at approximately 26o49'S 31o38'E His mother was the local ballet teacher. [1][2] He attended primary school at St Marks, a local government school in Mbabane that had only recently become racially integrated, and went on to secondary school at Waterford Kamhlaba, just outside Mbabane, where he was a day scholar. Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa (UWCSA is one of the twelve international United World Colleges and is located in Mbabane, Swaziland At the age of nine, he witnessed an adulterous relationship between his mother and another man that subsequently led to the break-up of his parents' marriage.
