When a lonely highway is inexplicably closed, five students sharing a ride to a party in the desert find themselves trapped at a recently deserted travel oasis. Refusing to let the new circumstances interfere with their fun, they settle in only to be interrupted by odd, haunting visions of severely mutilated travelers. The gruesome sightings may explain the sudden abandonment of the motel and diner, but the appearance of the retiree with a missing wife confirms their worst fears. He too has seen the dying people - victims of a killer, one that has likely taken his wife - a killer trailing a dark force of decay and rot.
The characters actually were the victims of the crash that they had passed on the way to their party, but after passing the crash site, they are no longer their physical selves but, rather their metaphysical selves living out the events of the film and not knowing they had ever been in an accident. The Motel can be seen as a halfway point between life and death (made clear by the frequent references to the motel sign reading "halfway house" and the poetry in the blood stained books). In this world, their injuries are manifested in the attacks by the “Reeker”, who is the writer/director's modern interpretation of the Grim Reaper (Reeker being a reference to the smell emanating from the demon wherever he goes). In English Death is often given the name the " Grim Reaper " and shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large Scythe, and wearing a midnight black gown robe The modern Reaper, or Reeker, has a mechanized scythe and instead of being skeletal is portrayed as being a decaying corpse that stinks of rotting flesh, smell being the key theme of the movie as it is the first sense you get at birth but, more importantly, the last sense you are left with before death. Every person the Reeker kills corresponds to that person dying in the crash and the manner in which he kills them also indicates the way they died in the accident. For example: Nelson has his jugular severed by glass and he dies in the crash by going headfirst through the windscreen. The presence of the drug dealer is important as he is the only actually living character throughout the movie, present at the crash because he was following Trip to retrieve his stolen drugs when he came upon their overturned car. The only other living character involved in the crash is the wife of the man driving the RV, not shown until the end because she survived the crashed with no injury while her husband is stuck in limbo with the other characters until he finally dies in real life. Ghostly apparitions seen throughout the film are people who are fighting in a limbo of their own or who have already died.
