This city is important because of the tourist attraction for Tarapith which contains an important Hindu temple and famous for the Great devotee 'Bamakhepa'. As state expressway no-4 passed through the town it is also well connected by road. Frequent State Transport Corp's buses & private owned buses helped the travellers to move to Siliguri, Coachbehar,Kolkata, Durgapur, Asansol, Medinipur, Malda ,Dumka ,Deoghar throughout the day.

The town is also khown for Stone crushers & mines , which are situated on the Bengal - Jharkhand border(most are in jharkhand). This belt provides employment to a wide range of peoples from all over Birbhum District & Santhal Pargana
Asish Banerjee of AITC won the Rampurhat assembly seat in 2006 and 2001 defeating Nirad Baran Mandal of AIFB in 2006 and Md. Hannan of FBL in 2001. Md. Hannan of FBL defeated Satyendranath Das of BJP in 1996. The Late Sashanka Sekhar Mondal of FBL defeated Satyendranath Das of BJP in 1991, Asish Banerjee of INC in 1987, Ananda Gopal Roy of INC in 1982 and Tapash Kumar Mukhopadhyay of JNP in 1977. [3]
