Its lyrics are about how the singer had committed a crime and was now "going to a place where the tough guys go. " He goes on to tell how hard prison is, and that it's a "place where a man don't show his feelings, a place where a man don't cry. " He warns of how he will return someday. The chorus reads:

"Oh, I'm prisonbound

Where the country moon shines.
Oh, I'm prisonbound
Tell my girl I'll be back one day.
Oh, I'm prisonbound
I may never know any other way. "
