Powdered milk is a powder made from dried (dehydrated) milk solids. Milk is an opaque white liquid produced by the Mammary glands of female Mammals (including Monotremes. Powdered milk has a far longer shelf life than liquid milk and does not need to be refrigerated due to its low moisture content. Shelf life is that length of time that Food, drink Medicine and other perishable items are given before they are considered unsuitable for sale or Refrigeration is the process of removing Heat from an enclosed space or from a substance and moving it to a place where it is unobjectionable

History

Powdered milk was first made in May 1802 by Russian doctor Osip Krichevsky. Year 1802 ( MDCCCII) was a Common year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar or a Common year starting on Wednesday of the It is found abundantly in many developing countries because of reduced transport and storage costs (removing water reduces bulk and weight; does not require refrigerated vehicles). Like other dry foods it is considered nonperishable and is favored by survivalists, hikers and other people in need of nonperishable easy to prepare foodstuffs which also are of a much lower mass compared to its alternative - hydrous milk. Survivalism is a commonly used term for the Preparedness strategy and subculture of individuals or groups anticipating and making preparations for future possible disruptions The word 'hiking' is understood in all English-speaking countries but there are differences in usage

Processing

Powdered milk is typically made by spray drying nonfat skim milk. Spray drying is a commonly used method of drying a liquid feed through a hot gas Milk is an opaque white liquid produced by the Mammary glands of female Mammals (including Monotremes. Whole milk powder can also be manufactured in a similar fashion. Pasteurized milk is first concentrated in an evaporator to about 50% milk solids. Pasteurization is the process of heating Liquids for the purpose of destroying bacteria, Protozoa, Molds and Yeasts The process was Within a Downstream processing system several stages are used to further isolate and purify the desired product The resulting concentrated milk is sprayed into a heated chamber where the water almost instantly evaporates, leaving behind fine particles of powdered milk solids.

Alternatively, the milk can be dried by drum drying. Drum drying is a method used for drying out liquids for example milk is applied as a thin film to the surface of a heated drum and the dried milk solids are then scraped off with a knife Milk is applied as a thin film to the surface of a heated drum, and the dried milk solids are then scraped off with a knife. Powdered milk made by drum drying tends to have a cooked flavor, due to caramelization caused by greater heat exposure. Caramelization or caramelisation is the Oxidation of Sugar, a process used extensively in cooking for the resulting nutty flavor and brown color

Yet another process is the use of freeze drying, freeze drying has the advantage of preserving many nutrients in milk compared to drum drying. Freeze drying (also known as lyophilization or cryodesiccation) is a Dehydration process typically used to preserve a perishable material [1]

The drying method and the heat treatments of the milk as it passes through the process alters the final properties of the milk powder (e. g - solubility in cold water, flavor, bulk density). Bulk density is a property of powders granules and other "divided" solids especially used in reference to Soil.

Uses

Powdered milk is frequently used in baking, in recipes where adding liquid milk would render the product too thin to be used. It is also a common sight in UN food aid supplies, fallout shelters, warehouses and wherever fresh milk is not a viable option. A fallout shelter is an enclosed space specially designed to protect occupants from radioactive debris or fallout resulting from a Nuclear explosion. Powdered milk is also used in Western blots as a blocking agent to prevent nonspecific protein interactions. The western blot (alternatively immunoblot) is an Analytical technique used to detect specific Proteins in a given sample of tissue homogenate or

Powdered milk is also used in areas without easy access to refrigeration to allow milk to be mixed and consumed in the home.

Reconstituting 1 cup of milk from powdered milk requires 1 cup of potable water and 1/3 cup of powdered milk.

Controversy

Compared to fresh milk, powdered milk (and powdered eggs) are stated to be exceptionally high in oxysterols (oxidized cholesterol). Powdered eggs are fully dehydrated eggs. They are made in a spray dryer in the same way that Powdered milk is made [1] The free radicals have been stated to have atherogenic ("causing atherosclerosis")[2] and carcinogenic ("causing cancer") properties. In Chemistry, radicals (often referred to as free radicals) are atoms molecules or ions with Unpaired electrons on an otherwise Open shell Atherosclerosis is a Disease affecting arterial Blood vessels It is a chronic inflammatory response in the walls of arteries in large part due to the accumulation Atherosclerosis is a Disease affecting arterial Blood vessels It is a chronic inflammatory response in the walls of arteries in large part due to the accumulation The term carcinogen refers to any substance Radionuclide or radiation that is an agent directly involved in the promotion of Cancer or in the fatation of its propagation Cancer (medical term Malignant Neoplasm) is a class of Diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled [3] Powdered milk is frequently added to 1-2% pasteurized milk to give it more body.
