Route description and plans

Port Jefferson Branch service in Nassau County begins when the Hempstead Branch separates from the Main Line at the Queens Interlocking in Bellerose. Bellerose is a Village in Nassau County, New York in the United States. The line from Queens Interlocking to Huntington is electrified and double tracked. Electrification extends to a point east of Huntington before Greenlawn Station on a layup track for electric trains. Greenlawn is a station for the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The line east of that point is not electrified and has a single track with passing sidings at Greenlawn, east of Northport, Kings Park, Smithtown and Stony Brook. Northport is a station on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Kings Park is a station for the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Smithtown is a station for the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Stony Brook is a historic station for the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Railroad.

Stations on the electrified portion that have the heaviest traffic include Mineola, Hicksville, and Huntington. There are occasional plans to electrify this line past Huntington, at least to Northport, in conjunction with the construction of a planned new electric train yard, to alleviate overcrowding and service limitations on the Ronkonkoma Branch, and to otherwise accommodate increased ridership expected once the East Side Access project to Grand Central Terminal is completed. Northport is a Village in Suffolk County, New York on the North Shore of Long Island. The Ronkonkoma Branch, occasionally called the Greenport Branch east of Ronkonkoma, is a Rail service operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR East Side Access is a public works project being undertaken by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA in New York City, designed to bring the Long Island "Grand Central Station" redirects here For other uses see Grand Central. History

The line from Hicksville to Syosset opened in 1854. Hicksville is a hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay and Census-designated place in Nassau County, New York, United States. Syosset is a hamlet (and a Census-designated place) in Nassau County, New York, within the Town of Oyster Bay. The LIRR later planned to extend to Cold Spring Harbor, but Oliver Charlick, the LIRR's president, disagreed over the station's location, so Charlick abandoned the grade and relocated the extension south of Cold Spring, refusing to add a station stop near Cold Spring for years. See Cold Spring Harbor for other uses of the name Cold Spring Harbor is a hamlet (and Census-designated place) in Another argument at Huntington led to the line bypassing the town two miles (3 km) to the south, though a station was built. The Town of Huntington is a town located on the North Shore of Long Island, in northwestern Suffolk County, New York. The line was extended from Syosset past Huntington to Northport in 1868,[4] and in 1873 the Smithtown and Port Jefferson Railroad opened from a mile south of Northport to Port Jefferson,[5] turning the old line into Northport into the Northport Branch, the result of another argument between Charlick and Northport. Northport is a Village in Suffolk County, New York on the North Shore of Long Island. The Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson is located in the town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County New York on the North Shore of Long Island The Northport Branch was a spur off the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, running from between Greenlawn and Northport stations [6]

The Port Jefferson Branch formerly extended to Wading River, and was once slated to continue eastward and rejoin the Main Line at Riverhead. Wading River is a hamlet (and Census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York, USA on the North Shore of Long Island Riverhead New York may refer to Riverhead (town New York Riverhead (CDP New York, within the town of Riverhead The line east of Port Jefferson was abandoned in 1938. The right-of-way is now used for the Long Island Power Authority's power lines. The Long Island Power Authority or LIPA "lie-pah", a municipal subdivision of the State of New York, was created under the Long Island Power Act of 1985 to acquire
