Pieter Lastman (1583, Amsterdam - buried 4 April 1633, Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter . Amsterdam (pronounced) is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west Events 1581 - Francis Drake completes a circumnavigation of the world and is knighted by Elizabeth I. ^[1] Lastman is important as a painter of history pieces and because his pupils included Rembrandt and Jan Lievens. Pieter Lastman was the son of a town-beadle, who was fired in 1578 because he stayed catholic. His mother was an appraiser of paintings and goods. His apprenticeship was with Gerrit Sweelinck, the brother of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (April or May 1562 &ndash October 16 1621 was a Dutch Composer, Organist, and Pedagogue whose work straddled the Between approximately 1604 and 1607 Lastman was in Italy, where he was influenced by Caravaggio (as were the painters of the Utrecht School a few years later) and by Adam Elsheimer. Because Rembrandt never visited Italy, it is likely that he was influenced by Caravaggio (see e. g. chiaroscuro) mainly or significantly via Lastman. Chiaroscuro ( Italian for light-dark) is a term in Art for a contrast between light and dark
