Paolo Virchi (1551-May 2, 1610), was an Italian composer and instrumentalist. Events 1194 - King Richard I of England gives Portsmouth its first Royal Charter. He was born in Brescia, and his father was Girolamo Virchi, an instrument maker. Brescia ( Lombard: Brèsa) is a city in the region of Lombardy in northern Italy. He joined the court of Alfonso II d'Este between 1579 and 1580. Alfonso II d'Este ( November 22, 1533 - October 27 1597) was Duke of Ferrara from 1559 to 1597 On the court rolls he is referred to as a singer, but in his publications he refers to himself as an organist and instrumentalist. He taught members of the court to sing and play the viol, and was one of few musicians at the court to receive a raise in salary during his tenure there.
