The park is named for the Dwarf Palmetto (Sabal minor) plant, which grows abundantly in the park. The Dwarf Palmetto ( Sabal minor) is one of about 14 species of palmetto palm (Arecaceae genus Sabal) The San Marcos River runs through the park and creates the 4-acre Oxbow Lake. The San Marcos River rises from the San Marcos Springs, the location of Aquarena Springs, in San Marcos Texas. There are many bogs throughout the park that are surrounded by dense vegetation, giving the park a jungle-like atmosphere.
