It was originally written and published by Francis Moore, a self-taught physician and astrologer who served at the court of Charles II. Francis Moore ( January 29, 1657 – 1715 was a British physician and Astrologer who wrote and published Old Moore's Almanack. Charles II (Charles Stuart 29 May 1630 – 6 February 1685 was the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
The first edition from 1697 contained weather forecasts. In 1700 Moore published Vox Stellarum, The Voice of the Stars, containing astrological observations; this was also known as Old Moore’s Almanack. It was a bestseller throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, selling as many as 107,000 copies in 1768. The almanac is still published annually today, giving predictions of world and sporting events, as well as more conventional data such as tide tables. It claims to have predicted the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The almanac is not to be confused with Old Moore's Almanac (without a 'k'), an Irish publication dating from approximately the same time.
