Ocaña is a town and municipality in the Colombian Department of Norte de Santander. Colombia (kəˈlʌmbɪə officially the Republic of Colombia () is a country in northwestern South America. Colombia is a unitary republic conformed by thirty-two departments ( Spanish: departamentos, sing Ocaña is the second largest populated center of this department. It played an important role during the Independence of Colombia from the Spanish monarchy. Bolívar's War is a term coined by some historians to refer to a series of independence wars in South America from 1811 to 1825 led by General Simón Bolívar.

History

The city was founded by Francisco Fernández de Contreras. In 1576 the city was moved to its present location. On April 9, 1828 the National Convention met to discuss the politic and administrative organization of the Republic.
